Niger

There are three Redemptorist communities in Niger, namely:

• Saint Clément de Garbado Community, Niamey
  • 1st Mission – Saint Gabriel de Garbado
  • 2nd Mission – Saint Michel de l’Aéroport
• Agadez Community – in the heart of the desert: outreach work
• Tchirozérine Community – faith and service to the most vulnerable

Niger is part of the Vice Province of West Africa and remains one of the most challenging mission territories in the region. As a predominantly Muslim country, the establishment and growth of Christian communities require patience, dialogue, and a strong missionary presence. For many years, Niger was considered a land largely untouched by the Gospel.

The Redemptorist mission in Niger traces its origins to 1941, with the arrival of the first Redemptorist missionaries in 1946. Inspired by a preferential option for the poor and the most abandoned, the Redemptorists played a pioneering role in the evangelisation of the country and helped lay the foundations of the local Church.

As the diocesan clergy gradually increased, many parishes were entrusted to local priests. Today, the Redemptorists continue their missionary service in four parishes across the Dioceses of Niamey and Maradi. In the Diocese of Niamey, they serve St. Gabriel Parish in Garbado and St. Michael Parish at the airport, while in the Diocese of Maradi they minister in Agadez and Tchirozérine, where they have been present since the 1960s.

Through parish ministry, evangelisation, pastoral accompaniment, and outreach to remote communities, the Redemptorists continue to witness to the Gospel and serve the people of Niger with dedication and hope.
