Severe storms in late 2024 caused major damage to classrooms, teachers’ houses, and essential facilities at Berejena Mission School in Chinhoyi, interrupting learning and creating unsafe conditions for students and staff.
In response, the Redemptorist Solidarity Office (RSO) implemented an emergency humanitarian project between December 2024 and February 2025, in partnership with the Catholic Diocese of Chinhoyi and with the support of Misean Cara. The intervention aimed to rapidly restore a safe and functional learning environment.
The project rehabilitated four classroom blocks, repaired ten teachers’ cottages, and restored a damaged storeroom. These actions enabled the school to fully resume operations and directly benefited 1,450 people, including 1,396 students and 54 teachers, by providing safe learning spaces and improved living conditions for staff.
This completed response demonstrates how timely, coordinated humanitarian action can protect the right to education and strengthen community resilience in the face of climate-related emergencies in Zimbabwe.
