Following the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Gamane on 26 March 2024, the Redemptorist Solidarity Office (RSO) successfully completed an emergency humanitarian response in northeastern Madagascar, in keeping with its mission to stand in solidarity with the poorest and most vulnerable communities during times of crisis.
The cyclone had a severe impact on communities in northeastern Madagascar, particularly in Ampanefena and Vohemar Districts, where the Redemptorists are actively working alongside local communities. More than 1,200 people were displaced as homes were flooded, damaged, or destroyed. The submersion of rice fields further threatened livelihoods and significantly increased food insecurity among already vulnerable households.
In partnership with the Redemptorist Vice Province of Madagascar and with the generous support of Misean Cara, the RSO delivered a timely and well-coordinated response. The completed project focused on three core humanitarian priorities: shelter, food security, and health. Displaced families received metal sheets and basic tools to construct temporary shelters, essential food items including rice to meet immediate nutritional needs, and medical kits to help prevent diarrheal diseases, particularly among children.
Beneficiaries were identified through community-based assessments carried out by the Redemptorists in collaboration with local authorities and community leaders. Feedback from the communities indicated a high level of satisfaction with the assistance provided, particularly regarding the relevance, timeliness, and quality of the support. Many families expressed relief at being able to rebuild safe shelter, secure food for their households, and access basic healthcare. This intervention helped stabilize affected households, reduce immediate suffering, and support early recovery, reflecting the RSO’s ongoing commitment to restoring dignity, hope, and resilience in communities affected by humanitarian emergencies.
